To What Extent Would The Development Of The Underground Section Of The Oyu Tolgoi Mine Boost The Mine’s Overall Output?
Rio Tinto approved the development of the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine last month, a step which would sharply boost production from the Oyu Tolgoi copper mine, where production from open-pit mining sections is currently in operation. First production from the underground sections is expected in 2020, with the full ramp up of production expected by 2027. As per a Rio Tinto press release, the expanded Oyu Tolgoi mine would produce 500,ooo metric tons of copper annually at full production rates in 2027. This figure represents an increase of around 70% from the base case, that is, production from only open-pit sections.
