Betting On Infrastructure Spending: Is Dover Or Hubbell The Better Way In?

Investors buy both Dover (DOV) and Hubbell (HUBB) to capture a multi-year cycle of spending on energy, grid, and data center equipment. Hubbell sells directly into this demand through its utility and electrical customers, while the growth markets highlighted by Dover’s management account for over 25% of Dover’s revenue. Investors still pay nearly the same earnings multiple for both companies, even though Dover posts slower sales growth. So is Dover catching up?

Dover’s Orders Jumped, But Hubbell Still Grows Faster
While Dover reported a jump in orders, Hubbell continues to lead on fiscal 2026 sales growth. Dover saw orders rise 16% from a year earlier during fiscal Q3 2026, posting growth across every segment. The company recorded a backlog 35% higher than a year prior, and management said roughly half of it is scheduled to ship in 2027. On October 22, Dover raised its fiscal 2026 revenue growth outlook.
Hubbell delivered a different update five days later. The company lifted its fiscal 2026 sales growth outlook to 18% to 19%, noting that the NSI acquisition is now expected to add approximately 7.5% to that growth. Even on organic growth alone, Hubbell expects 10% to 11% for fiscal 2026, compared with organic growth of 5% to 6% for Dover. Ultimately, Dover’s news points partly to 2027, when about half of its backlog is scheduled to ship, while Hubbell’s outlook centers on fiscal 2026 sales that include acquired revenue.
Dover Adds Capacity While Carrying Less Debt
Dover operates with a lighter balance sheet. Total debt at Dover equals 12.0% of its market value, compared with 24% for Hubbell. Management guided Dover’s fiscal 2026 capital spending to $200 million to $220 million, a budget that includes new plants for products such as cryogenic components. At the same time, Dover is buying back its own shares, spending $330 million on them during the third quarter.
Consolidating its plants has carried a cost too. Management said Dover absorbed $40 million of costs in its food retail business during the first nine months of 2026 from ramping up production and running two plants for the output of one.
Hubbell’s acquisitions brought costs of their own. Third-quarter earnings per share grew more slowly than operating profit, and management cited higher interest expense from the NSI and DMC Power deals as one reason. Management also noted that Hubbell is committed to reducing its debt over the next two years.
Hubbell Leads On Growth And Margin, Dover On Price
Hubbell maintains a lead on business operations. Over the twelve months ended September 30, 2026, Hubbell’s revenue grew 16.0%, outpacing the 8.2% growth at Dover. Hubbell also kept 20% of its revenue as operating profit over those months, compared with 17.0% for Dover. Furthermore, Hubbell lowered none of its company-wide forecasts in its October 27 release, while Dover trimmed its outlook for reported earnings per share. Hubbell’s only cut was a slight reduction in its 2026 growth outlook for the Utility Solutions segment, to 6% to 7%.
Dover offers an advantage on valuation and debt. The stock trades at 23.3 times earnings, compared with 24.4 for Hubbell, and carries a lighter debt load. If Dover’s orders fail to translate into faster sales, you would be paying close to Hubbell’s price for the slower business with the thinner margin.
Lighter debt counts in a squeeze. When rates jumped in 2022, the cash-rich side won every matchup.
Dover’s lighter debt is already in place; whether its recent orders become faster sales remains an open question. Dover’s revenue growth in its fiscal Q4 2026 report, expected in January 2027, is the number to watch.
Now You Know Dover. Here Is A Better Way To Invest
Before you decide on DOV, consider owning 30 quality companies instead of one. The Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105% since its September 2020 launch, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P MidCap and Russell 2000.
