Microsoft Rolls Out Lync Enterprise Chat Apps for Mobile Users on All OS Platforms

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is one of the largest players in the enterprise software market where it competes with Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL), SAP (NYSE:SAP) & Salesforce.com (NASDAQ:CRM) among others. Office is its most valuable businesses, bringing in a major portion of its revenues, and accounting for nearly 29% of its Trefis price estimate.

The Office business includes Lync (previously known as Office Communicator), an enterprise chat app which is integrated with other Microsoft software like Office and Sharepoint. It competes primarily with apps like Salesforce.com’s Chatter, Google Messenger and Yammer. Microsoft has announced that it will be launching Lync chat apps for all major mobile platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry. [1] In the last quarter, Microsoft’s Office sales grew nearly 8%, while sales of other productivity offerings like Lync, Sharepoint and Exchange grew 17%.

Enterprise Software Giants Focusing on Mobile and the Cloud

Most enterprise software giants are focusing on two trends to drive growth in the coming years – mobile and cloud computing. The next versions of Microsoft’s Windows and Office will be compatible with tablets. Microsoft has already launched a cloud based version of Office – Office 365, to take on Google Docs. SAP recently stated that it was focusing on mobile, cloud and big data to drive growth, and has launched an enterprise mobile app store.

Oracle recently launched the Oracle Public Cloud, and acquired RightNow, a cloud based customer service company to take on Salesforce.com in cloud based CRM. Salesforce.com acquired Model Metrics, which specializes in mobile technologies, and has launched several new cloud based enterprise apps.
